Have you heard of Woodsburgh? It may be small, but it has had a major impact on the Five Towns’ development.

In fact, it was one of Long Island’s first planned communities that catered to business commuters.

Thanks to Samuel Wood and Robert Burton, who initiated its development, Woodsburgh has continued to thrive and grow into the tranquil residential haven it is today.

Welcome to Woodsburgh – a charming community steeped in history and a captivating past. Back in the late 1800s, the growth of transportation made it possible for the affluent population from New York to head eastwards, looking for a spot to unwind and have some fun during the summer months.

This led to the creation of luxurious mansions along the south shore, and the establishment of exclusive social clubs like The Rockaway Hunting Club and The Woodmere Club.

To this day, these clubs continue to be synonymous with activities like hunting, fishing, boating, lawn tennis and golf.

Woodsburgh has also been the home to prominent personalities like Henry Ziegler, the founder of Steinway Piano, and William Fox, who founded Fox Film Corporation.

Not to mention, other luminaries of the day like Diamond Jim Brady and Lillian Russell were also known to summer in this famous village.

why isn't Woodsburg considered to be one of the Five Towns?

This popular question deserves an answer and here it is.

The reason Woodsburgh (often called Woodsburg) isn’t considered part of the “Five Towns” comes down to history and local convention, not geography.

The Original Five Towns

The “Five Towns” traditionally refers to:

Lawrence
Cedarhurst
Woodmere
Hewlett
Inwood

All of these are in the southwest corner of Nassau County, within the Town of Hempstead. The term dates back to around the 1930s and 1940s, when local organizations, newspapers, and civic groups began using “Five Towns” as a collective name to describe this cluster of affluent suburban communities.

Where Woodsburgh Fits

Woodsburgh is a small incorporated village located right between Woodmere and Hewlett.
It’s geographically part of the same area, and socially/economically very similar (affluent, residential).
But because of its small size and lower population, it was not included when the “Five Towns” identity originally formed.

Why It’s Not Counted

Population & Scale: Woodsburgh is tiny (under 1,000 residents) compared to the others. It simply didn’t carry enough weight to be grouped in the original “Five.”
Timing: When the term “Five Towns” gained popularity, Woodsburgh was not as distinct or widely recognized as the larger villages.
Local Tradition: Over time, the phrase stuck. Even though locals know Woodsburgh is “in between” Hewlett and Woodmere, the brand of “Five Towns” remained fixed.

Today

Some people casually lump Woodsburgh in as an “honorary sixth,” but officially, the Five Towns remain Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Hewlett, Woodmere, and Inwood.
Woodsburgh is often mentioned in real estate listings as part of the Five Towns area, even though it’s not one of the “basic five.”
