Here are some interesting facts about Lawrence:

A Planned Summer Resort: Lawrence was initially developed in the 1850s by three brothers—Alfred, Newbold, and George Lawrence—as a summer resort for wealthy New Yorkers. They built the original train station and roads, attracting prominent families who built grand homes. Many of these historic estates, some dating back to the American Revolution, still stand in the area known as “Old Lawrence.”

The Loss of its Oceanfront: In the late 19th century, a series of powerful storms and nor’easters dramatically altered Lawrence’s coastline. They destroyed a large beachfront hotel and effectively separated the village from direct ocean access. This event shifted the community’s focus from a seaside resort to a thriving suburb.

A Historic Landmark: The Rock Hall Museum, a National Historic Landmark, is located in Lawrence. This Georgian-style mansion was built in 1767 for a wealthy plantation owner.
