Nestled within Suffolk County, New York, the Town of Brookhaven is uniquely positioned, spanning from its northern coast on the Long Island Sound to the southern shores by the Great South Bay. This sprawling town encompasses nine villages and fifty unincorporated hamlets, each contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Long Island’s cherished Brookhaven.

Before European settlers arrived, the Setauket and Unkechaug tribes were the original stewards of Brookhaven’s lands. To this day, the Unkechaug tribe maintains the Poospatuck Reservation on Long Island’s North Fork, a testament to their enduring presence. 

English settlers arrived by 1640, and in 1655, they formally acquired the territory from the native communities. They christened their first settlement “Setauket,” paying homage to the indigenous people from whom they’d secured the land. By the mid-19th century, Brookhaven’s population had doubled, driven by significant growth between 1825 and the Civil War era.

According to the 2010 census, Brookhaven’s population stands at a robust 486,040 residents. Earlier estimates from 2006 marked the median household income at around $73,566, reflecting a solid economic foundation. The town is also home to a significant portion of Fire Island and the vast Great South Bay. 

Brookhaven National Laboratory, a pivotal institution under the U.S. Department of Energy, resides within the hamlet of Upton, where groundbreaking research in nuclear and high-energy physics, neurosciences, and environmental sciences unfolds.

 Additionally, the State University of New York at Stony Brook, along with its esteemed Stony Brook University Medical Center, stands within Brookhaven, further cementing the town’s reputation as a hub for both academic excellence and scientific exploration.
