Our Story

Founded by Dan Steigerwald, Designscapes of Long Island was born from a passion for both horticulture and artistic design. With extensive knowledge of plant science and growing conditions, Dan combined this expertise with sophisticated design principles to create a company that approaches landscape architecture as both an art and a science.

Over our 40+ year history, we’ve earned more than 35 landscape design awards and built a reputation for excellence that spans generations. Today, we’re proud to work with the children and grandchildren of our original clients—a testament to the lasting quality and timeless appeal of our designs.

Meet Our Leadership Team

Dan Steigerwald – Founder & Owner

Dan is a local & national award-winning landscape designer with a degree in landscape design & horticulture from Farmingdale University. With over five decades of experience, Dan has established himself as one of Long Island’s most respected landscape professionals.

Unlike many designers, Dan doesn’t impose a “signature style.” Instead, he invites clients’ tastes and desires to direct the course of his designs, creating truly personalized outdoor environments.

When Dan founded Designscapes of Long Island in 1985, his vision was to build a landscape design company that provided exceptional quality at fair prices. His eye for detail, creative flair, and constant vision for innovation have become the hallmarks of our company.

Doug is a 1976 graduate of Farmingdale University. He was the grower for Waldbaum Supermarkets from 1976 – 1978 and then started Kwality Landscaping & Lawn Care. Next he discovered & purchased Miskosky’s 3 acre Flower Garden in 1980 and started Long Island Flower Garden & Florist in East Patchogue growing from 1980 to 2016. He has first hand landscaping, nursery, indoor & outdoor horticultural and greenhouse growing experiences for over 55 years. From 1996 – 2010 Doug was also ranked #27 in online sales in FTD & Teleflora gifting networks globally.

Since 1995 Doug gave over 15,000 hours volunteering to the revitalization of Patchogue Village in roles such as Greater Patchogue Chamber of Commerce President, Secretary, Beautification Chairman, Technology & Visionary Committee Chairman, Patchogue Youth Services board member, founded the civic group Focus East Patchogue and co-founded The Patchogue Garden Club.

In 2017, Doug joined Dan at Designscapes of Long Island Design/Build landscaping to continue developing & growing our landscaping business model island wide. We do so by researching and introducing new and exciting outdoor living product lines and services so we may continue to grow and make outdoor living dreams come to life across Long Island.

The Houzz community is celebrated around the world for their superior taste in design and renovation professionals. This year, many of these top-notch experts have been recognized with a coveted Design or Service award – or even both! Kudos to the Cambridge rep, Chuck who tried to remedy the problem with his own labor, but the majority of white dots remain....End result: definitely use Dan for your job; do not use Cambridge...or any other paving stone company that fails to alert you to the possibility of this occurrence.
